Male Torso Series 2004
The “Male Torso Series” is a developing project of self-portraits that deal with gender stereotypes. Each photograph acts out a particular profession predominantly held by men. In today’s society, it is looked down or made fun when a woman holds a customarily male dominated job. The purpose for this work is to provide inspiration and empowerment to all women in
their occupational choices. This series breaks traditional barriers that discriminate women in certain areas of the workforce, celebrates women’s contribution in society and supports efforts for the equal rights of women. All the photographic images were taken of the subject in a similar pose, focusing and exposing an unclothed torso. They are cropped at the breast area and thighs. Simple props were used to define the profession
represented. Each subject takes on different gestures to create their own character. The images were printed full frame with an ink-jet printer. There are a total of seven images in the first part of the series each measuring 18X24in.
